I recently joined Rep. Claudia Tenney (R-NY) and other Members of Congress in signing an amicus brief supporting the Supreme Court case NYSPRA v. Corlett to address unconstitutional limits placed on Americans’ second amendment rights. NYSPRA v. Corlett challenges New York’s Sullivan Law as a violation of the Second Amendment and condemns a blanket ban on the right to keep and bear arms outside the home.
Under the Sullivan Law, citizens are required to have permission from the state government to carry their privately purchased handgun. This not only transforms a fundamental right guaranteed to the American people into a special privilege to be enjoyed by an elite few, it has also historically and disproportionately excluded non-elite immigrants and “disfavored” minorities from gun ownership.
Every year, women and men use firearms to defend themselves against attackers. It is vital that the American people continue to have the ability to defend themselves as crime rates continue to skyrocket under the Biden Administration and calls to defund the police. I have voted, and will continue to vote to defend the right to keep and bear arms as protected by the Second Amendment to the Constitution.
