With heavy hearts, the family of Lawrence “Larry” Harold Smith announce his passing on Monday, February 13, 2023. Larry was a beloved husband, father, son and brother who served both his family and country with honor. He will be sadly missed.

Larry was born in the small town of Sandy Creek, NY on March 22, 1942. His parents owned a local insurance company, and his younger sister grew up to work in the local school system. Larry decided to join the Air Force in 1962 and saw the world. He spent his entire career in the Air Force and served in many locations including New Mexico, The Philippines, Germany, Arizona, North Dakota, and Texas. He retired as Sr. Master Sargent in 1985. During his service he earned the Bronze Star during Viet Nam along with many other honors.

When he retired, he lived his dream playing golf in The Villages and was active with bowling leagues, The Eagles, VFW, gardening, and entertaining neighbors for Happy Hour. They would tell you he could pour a mean Manhattan. Later in life he moved to Ocala and enjoyed volunteering at the local Hospice. He had a generous heart and sincerely believed in the good works of that organization.

Larry is survived by his mother, Ruth Smith Bousquet, sister and her husband, Georgia and Larry Gola, his three children Diane Smith, Jesse Smith and Lara Horner (sp. Richard), his wife Mary P. Smith, and several nieces, nephews, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by Shirley K. Smith.

There will be a military service followed by his internment on March 15 at 12:30 PM in Florida National Cemetery, 6502 SW 102nd Ave, Bushnell, FL 33513 (352) 793-7740. The family asks that in lieu of flowers, and if you feel compelled to, you can donate to the Hospice of Marion County, 3231 SW 34th Ave, Ocala, FL 34474 (352) 873-7400 https://www.hospiceofmarion.com.
