The Amenity Authority Committee has rendered a decision on a $1.26 million bid for a controversial golf maintenance facility.
AAC member William Williamson pointed out at Wednesday’s AAC meeting at Savannah Center that fellow AAC member Jim Vaccaro was absent, which was important considering Vaccaro has consistently vowed to vote against the facility, arguing that it should not be paid for with residents’ amenity money.
Williamson made a motion to table a vote on the Mira Mesa facility, because of Vaccaro’s planned absence. Williamson also said he had numerous questions about the project.
“It’s a very expensive maintenance building, to be truthful,” Williamson said.
Specifically, he said he was concerned that nearly $500,000 of the project would be spent on site and road work. He questioned paying to pave a dirt road that is owned by the Developer.
Assistant District Manager Bruce Brown said deliveries could not be made to the new facility with the current road.
“When it rains, it becomes a mud pit,” Brown said.
Deputy District Manager Carrie Duckett added that the Developer’s portion of the roadway was relatively small.
AAC member Rich Cole, who serves as the Developer’s representative, made a motion for the approval of the low bid from Qualis General Contractors LLC.
AAC member Don Deakin urged his fellow committee members to slow down and listen to all of Williamson’s questions.
“I don’t like the way this has played out,” Deakin said. “I think we railroaded the motion through.”
Deakin added that he supported the need for the facility, but said that Williamson was raising legitimate questions.
In the end, the vote was 4-1, with Williamson casting the lone dissenting vote.
