A story for young grandkids

Barry Evans
Barry Evans

Someone has suggested that I write a story for young grandkids.  I recognize that there are some people who prefer not to have a story for young grandchildren.  I assume that there are many reasons for that – perhaps some were traumatized by a story when they were young.  Others just don’t like them.  Whatever the reason, which is none of my business, I am mentioning the request as I intend to honor it.  Thus, instead of reading further, you may wish to go on to something more productive and enjoy life at that level.  In any case, you cannot say that I didn’t warn you.

Roland & Tim
(Their Story)

Roland was a big man!
Roland carried a very big sword! (It had a big flashing stone on the hilt)
He worked for a most powerful king.
The king’s name was Charles the Great!  (He thought he was great).
No one called the king, Charley.
You do not call kings, Charley.
If you did, you might end up in a dungeon.
A dungeon is a big dark place – with spiders!
Roland did not want to end up in a dungeon.
Roland hated spiders.
So Roland called the king, “Sir” and did good deeds.
One day, the King told Roland to fight a fire breathing dragon.
The dragon lived two hills over near Grandma’s house.
The dragon, whose name was Tim, was HUGE
Tim was really a nice dragon.
He could not help breathing fire.
In fact, he would help the ladies start logs in their fireplaces.
The ladies would pat him on the head and give him marshmallows.
Tim loved marshmallows.
Unfortunately, Tim would sometimes start fire when he shouldn’t.
He thought he would get more marshmallows that way.
This is why Charles the Great sent Roland with his big sword – named Sam
When Tim saw Roland with his big sword named Sam, he was worried.
When Roland saw how huge Tim was, he was worried.
Roland was brave, so he charged with Sam held up high.
Tim quickly pulled out some marshmallows he had saved.
He put them on Roland’s sword, and breathed fire on them.
They smelled so good, that Roland ate one and then another.
Tim and Roland sat on the ground and ate up all the marshmallows.
Roland told Tim to start fires only when asked.
Tim said, “OK”.
Roland told the king that Tim would be good.
The king was pleased.
They lived happily ever after!
Except for the time when a wicked witch took all the marshmallows.
But that is another story.

Anybody who has read this far and is not a grandkid, may I offer my congratulations – you are still a grandkid at heart!
