An accident report released by the Lady Lake Police Department has identified the motorcyclist critically injured in a high-speed crash Friday afternoon on U.S. Hwy. 2/441 in Lady Lake.
Eligio Angel Velez, 38, of Lady Lake, had been riding a 2015 Suzuki GSXR motorcycle at 3:36 p.m. Friday northbound on U.S. Hwy. 27/441 when a silver pickup made a right turn onto U.S. Hwy. 27/441 into the path of the motorcycle, according to an accident report from the Lady Lake Police Department.
The motorcycle, which witnesses said was traveling at a high rate of speed, swerved to avoid the truck, hit the grassy median and Velez began to lose control. Velez was thrown from the motorcycle and landed about 100 feet away from where the motorcycle crashed. His helmet flew off his head due to the impact, the accident report indicated. The helmet cracked on its right side.
He was flown by helicopter to Ocala Regional Medical Center.
