Avoid post-storm scams, hire a licensed contractor

In the aftermath of Hurricane Irma, Lake County’s Building Services Division is warning residents against hiring unlicensed contractors.

“Both homes and businesses assessing the damage caused by Irma will likely be seeking a construction contractor in the coming days and weeks,” said Robert Chandler, Economic Growth Director. “Many storm-related services require state licensing, and it is important citizens do their due diligence in hiring a licensed professional.”

Roof repairs, roof installations, window installations, plumbing repairs and electrical repairs or rewiring all require a state license with the Department of Business and Professional Regulation (DBPR.) Common storm-related services that do not require state licensure include trimming or removal of fallen trees, removal of debris or placement of tarps on roofs.

“Be sure the company you hire to do work is licensed, bonded and insured, and that they have the qualifications to complete the work,” said Chandler. “Licensed contractors must also pass background checks.”

Lake County Building Services offers an online contractor search available at: www.lakecountyfl.gov/departments/growth_management/building_services/contractor_certification/contractor_tracking.aspx. Citizens may also call 352-343-9653 for more information.
