Baby dies as result of crash on U.S. 301 in Sumter County

A two-month-old baby has died as the result of a crash Sunday night on U.S. 301 in Sumter County.

The child’s mother, Cassandra French, 24, of Webster, died at the scene of the crash, which occurred at 7:05 p.m. on U.S. 301, south of County Road 720.

Her 1998 Ford Expedition traveled off the roadway, she overcorrected and traveled back across the roadway, into the northbound lane and collided with a 2016 BMW M3 driven by 34-year-old Melissa Tobey of Oveido. She was seriously injured.

The Florida Highway Patrol announced in a news release Tuesday that the baby, Gerald French, has died of injuries suffered in the crash.
