A barrel containing an “unknown substance” fell from a truck and caused a traffic detour Friday afternoon on County Road 466 near Southern Trace Plaza.
The yellow barrel fell from a truck shortly before 2 p.m., blocking traffic in a westbound lane of traffic on County Road 466 at Southern Trace.
A kerosene-like substance spilled from the barrel out onto the roadway in front of a Circle K station. The substance appeared to be rapidly evaporating.
Sumter County Public Works was sending equipment as a precaution to keep the substance from being washed into a storm drain in case of the unlikely occurrence of rain this afternoon.
The Sumter County Sheriff’s Office, Villages Public Safety Department and Community Watch were all on scene.
