The boyfriend of a woman living in her father’s home in The Villages is free on bond following his arrest on a felony battery charge.

Derek John Hoffman, 36, who lists an address on Carrera Drive in The Villages, was arrested Thursday on a third-degree felony after punching a woman, according to an arrest report from the Sumter County Sheriff’s Office.

Hoffman was identified last month as the boyfriend and sometime caretaker of the 8-year-old son of 41-year-old Susan Newman, who has been in the headlines because of her ongoing battle with her 82-year-old father. Charles Newman is attempting to evict his daughter from his home at 1813 W. Schwartz Blvd.

Hoffman was at a residence in Oxford when he was arrested at about 5 p.m. Thursday after an altercation with a woman whose name was redacted from the arrest report. The woman said she and her young son had been left stranded for more than two hours during a shopping trip after Hoffman left in his black 2000 Lincoln to see friends. The woman got a lift to a home in Oxford, where she found Hoffman. While they were in the home’s driveway, Hoffman began “cursing” at the woman and punched her with “a closed fist, in the center of her face, striking her nose and upper lip,” the report said. The woman called 911. The attack was witnessed by her son. The report noted that Hoffman and the woman were in a “domestic relationship.”

Hoffman was arrested last year on a charge of battery and was placed on probation, but won early termination of that probation. In 2016 during a drunk driving arrest in The Villages, Hoffman hurled racial slurs at Sumter County sheriff’s deputies. He lost his driver’s license for six months. In 2014, he was arrested for possession of cannabis and drug paraphernalia. He was placed on probation for six months and later provided the court with proof that he had completed a substance abuse evaluation. In 2008, he was convicted of battery in Ohio.

Hoffman was released Friday afternoon after posting $2,000.

Charles Newman also is facing a charge of battery after a Sept. 13 altercation with his daughter. He has been barred from his home by a “no contact” order.
