CDD 2 supervisors promise agitated resident work will begin soon on villa roadways

Community Development District 2 supervisors approved a plan Friday to spend $337,925 to repair roadways in three villa communities.

Crews will begin “as soon as possible” to do mill and overlay work on roadways in Villa de Leon and Villa del Canto in the Village of Alhambra, as well as in Villa Escandido near the Savannah Center in the Village of Santiago. That process also will include the process of adding a rejuvenator to seal the roads in the future.

Mill and overlay work is scheduled for Acosta Court in Villa de Leon in the Village of Alhambra.

Villager Monica Carter, who lives on Acosta Court in Villa de Leon, told supervisors that she was upset with the condition of the roadways near her home and couldn’t understand why they were allowed to get in such bad shape. She provided supervisors photos of Acosta Court that were shown on a display as she spoke.

“I walked that (road) this morning and my shoes got full of stuff,” she said. “That road is terrible. There are only eight houses on that road – eight – and if that road looks like that for only eight houses, what do the other roads look like in Alhambra?” an obviously agitated Carter asked the board, adding, “You walk it and it just crumbles.”

CDD 2 Chairman John Blum told Carter that the villa roads were supposed to be repaired last year but had to be put on hold because of the expenses associated with cleaning up after Hurricane Irma.

“Those two are going to receive priority and be done first, so anything that’s there today is going to be taken care of,” he said of the villa roads in Alhambra. “So you will not have to face those problems in the future. It’s being set up to be done as soon as possible.”

Work to repair the crumbling service of Acosta Court and other villa roads will begin soon. The work originally was scheduled for last year but was delayed by Hurricane Irma expenses.

Carter, who didn’t seem satisfied with Blum’s answer, added that she’s lived in her villa for 18 years and for the past several years, there have been problems with the roads.

“Then they come out and fix them and it’s just like putting a Band-Aid on it,” she said.

Blum again explained to Carter that the roads should have been repaired last year and the work is being scheduled as soon as possible.

“I hope this time when it’s done that we’re not coming back here next year and saying, ‘What’s happened to our road,’” Carter said. “We need somebody to think about the people that have lived here a long time and do it right. Because if it isn’t done right, you’re going to hear from me again – and probably more people from Alhambra.”
