Evelyn P. Farkas, 71, of The Villages, FL, passed away Saturday, June 17, 2017. Mrs. Farkas was born June 5, 1946 in Queens, NY to Americo and Evelyn (Jones) Colabelli.
She was a retired educator and had taught the hearing impaired. Originally living on Long Island, the first 25 years of her career was in the Longwood School District business office. While there, she also pursued a teaching career. She achieved a Bachelor’s degree from Adelphi Suffolk, and a Master’s degree from St Joseph University. During this time her husband, Ron, worked for the major aerospace contractor in the area. In 1993, a downturn in that business resulted in moving to their condominium in North Palm Beach, FL.
Evelyn then began a 15 year career in teaching the hearing impaired within the Palm Beach County School System. She established the first program and curriculum for an incoming group of hearing impaired students at Congress Middle School. Years later, varying student loads required her to travel among several schools to provide special assistance to hearing impaired students who were in mainstream programs.
Evelyn and Ron did not have children. They enjoyed boating, traveling, and visiting her friends and family. In 2008 they both retired. For several years they traveled to destinations abroad such as China, Egypt, Kenya, Australia, and the Baltic region. At the suggestion of a best friend, they moved here in 2011 from North Palm Beach. Until her illness, they enjoyed golf and traveling by motor home.
She was a member of St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church. Survivors include her loving husband of 50 years, Ron; sister, Lynn Gruner; brother, Richard Colabelli and a special nephew, Scott Thayer.
A funeral mass will be held 12:00pm, Tuesday, June 27, 2017 in St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church, Wildwood.
