On Saturday, Feb. 16, beginning at 10 a.m. (doors open at 9:15 a.m.) at the Allamanda Recreation Center, the Lake Sumter American Association of University Women (AAUW) will have an informative program on Dr. Mary McLeod Bethune, her history and accomplishments.

Synthia Stephens-Fletcher, member of Daytona Beach Branch AAUW, is the guest speaker at the Feb 16 AAUW general meeting. Synthia is a native of Daytona Beach, Florida. She is currently the AAUW Diversity Chair for the State of Florida AAUW and Sythnia will present the history and accomplishments of Dr. Bethune.

Dr. Bethune was an adviser to FDR and the founder of Bethune Cookman College in Daytona Beach. In 2018, the Florida Legislature designated her as the subject of one of FL’s two statues in the National Statuary Hall Collection replacing a confederate general.

The meeting doors open 9:15 a.m. with social time – coffee and munchies supplied. There will be a short business meeting at 10 a.m. followed by the program. Potential members are welcome to attend.
