During the Middle Ages, the church sought for a way to make the Crucifixion of Christ more immediate and heart-felt among the people who came to pray. Many of them could neither read nor write. Just hearing the words of the Bible made little impression, especially year after year.
Someone whose name is lost to history came up with the bright idea of “The Stations of the Cross.” They are a series of images, carved or painted, that graphically show what the final day of Jesus was like. Based on the Via Dolorosa in Jerusalem or actual path of Christ to Mount Calvary, they invite the worshipper to enter into the suffering of Christ at a deep and personal level.
These images have come to form the basis of a very popular service called “The Stations of the Cross.” The object of the stations is to help faithful Christians to make a spiritual pilgrimage through contemplation of the Passion of Christ. As such, it has become one of the most popular devotions. In fact, the stations can be found in many Anglican churches. Our Stations of the Cross service will begin at 10am on Good Friday, April 19th. All are welcome to come experience this spiritual pilgrimage.
