To the Editor:
First, conservative dogma falsely claims that individual taxes in America are higher than other countries. Secondly, during Trump’s campaign he promised many actions that he had no plan to implement, all to get votes. One promise was to reduce taxes for most Americans. Lately Republicans were approached by corporations and their wealthy donors with what is called ‘pay for play’. They told Republicans that if they didn’t pass legislation to reduce taxes for wealthy donors and corporations they would not be supportive donors come 2018.
Therefore, never was the intent of this tax plan to help the average American and it doesn’t. Millions of lower income Americans will have increased, not decreased, taxes. Surprisingly 65% of Americans understand this and oppose the bill as written. Most of these Americans are incensed that money will be taken from them to benefit millionaires and huge corporations. This is yet another case where Republicans are taking actions contrary to the desires of most Americans.
Surprisingly many Americans don’t ‘buy’ the Trickledown-Theory where if you make the wealthy richer then money will trickle down to most Americans. Independent analysis of the bill projects that the House bill would reduce government revenues up to $1.7 trillion over 10 years and increase U.S. debt by as much as $2.1 trillion over the same window. The problem is that Republicans falsely assume that the tax reduction will vastly stimulate the economy. The facts are that Trickledown has not worked in the past and will not work now. Recent history has shown that the wealthy have become richer while most Americans have become poorer. The tragedy is that when the tax plan doesn’t work Republicans will have to cut existing programs for most Americans, making them even poorer. This will not making America great again!
