The superintendent of Lake County Schools will be the guest of honor during an upcoming meeting of the League of Women Voters of The Villages/Tri-County area.
Diane Kornegay, who became superintendent in July 2017 after a national search, will address the challenges of public education in Lake County, the state’s 19th largest district with about 43,000 students, more than 5,500 employees and 50 learning sites. The event begins at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, Oct. 22 at Belvedere Library, located at 325 Belvedere Blvd. in The Villages.
Prior to joining Lake County Schools, Kornegay served as deputy superintendent in the Clay County School District. In that role, she was responsible for the daily operation and management of the district. She also oversaw the allocation of financial and human resources, evaluated the annual performance of school principals and other district administrators, and assisted all district administrators in the implementation of policies and practices.
Kornegay started her education career in 1987 as a second-grade teacher in Duval County. She helped open a new inner-city school that served as a magnet program for technology. And she worked as the school’s technology teacher for grades K-5.
Kornegay, who also has served as principal of three elementary schools and held several other high-level education-related positions, has a bachelor’s degree in elementary education and a master’s degree in administration and supervision, both from the University of North Florida.
The League of Women Voters also would like to remind citizens in Lake, Marion and Sumter counties that pertinent information relating to the upcoming Nov. 6 general election is available at vote411.org. Those visiting the site will find amendment pros and cons and unedited responses to questionnaires from local candidates.
