Two teenagers were arrested after pooling their money to make a purchase of marijuana.

The pair had been traveling in a vehicle at 1:35 a.m. Saturday on State Road 35 in Oxford when a Sumter County sheriff’s deputy noticed their vehicle had an inoperable taglight.

The driver was identified as 18-year-old Charles Lynwood McCullough IV of Summerfield and a passenger in the vehicle was identified as 18-year-old Drake Kristo Phillips of Ocala. Both “appeared to be very nervous,” according to the arrest report.

A K-9 unit arrived on the scene, and the dog alerted on the vehicle, indicating the presence of drugs. Located in the vehicle’s center console was a sandwich-style bag which contained marijuana.

The pair told the deputy they had pooled their money and purchased $45 worth of marijuana two days earlier.

Both men were arrested on charges of marijuana possession and booked at the Sumter County Detention Center on $1,000 bond each.

McCullough was also issued a written warning for the equipment violation.
