Third-grader slams Ocala teacher with chair during attack

An Ocala teacher was attacked by a third-grader Wednesday after she told him to stop fiddling with power outlets and cords.

The Marion Oaks Elementary School teacher told the school’s resource officer that the 9-year-old started hitting her a short time later. She also told the resource officer, who is a Marion County sheriff’s deputy, that the student “continued to strike her and at one point picked up a student chair and struck her in the left knee.” The teacher told the deputy that she didn’t require medical treatment and would follow the protocol set forth by the Marion County School Board, a sheriff’s office report states.

The deputy then joined the school’s dean and principal in a meeting with the student and his adopted mother at the school, located at 280 Marion Oaks Trail in Ocala. The student said he understood “there would be repercussions for his actions” and behavior of that nature wouldn’t be tolerated in the future, the report says, adding that school administrators were told that the boy suffers from several mental and behavioral issues.

It was decided that the school would handle any punitive action against the student. But due to the age of the boy and “other mitigating factors regarding his behavior,” a sheriff’s office report was generated to document the incident.
