A Villager is seeking permission to return home after an alleged attack on his wife last month at their residence in the Village of Haciendas of Mission Hills.
Robert J. Schaeffer, 65, remains free on $30,000 bond following his arrest Aug. 13 on charges of battery and kidnapping at his home on Avecilla Drive.
Schaeffer and his wife had been arguing for eight weeks before he “grabbed her by the throat and told her they were both going to die tonight,” according to an arrest report from the Sumter County Sheriff’s Office. He put his hands around her neck and tried to force her into a car. She was able to break free after she kneed him in the groin.
A deputy who examined the Ohio native’s wife found bruises on her body, including some that were a week old, the arrest report indicated.
Upon his release on bond, Schaeffer was ordered not to have contact with his wife. Now, he is hoping to modify his bond conditions and return home. A motion filed by Schaeffer’s attorney, Mark Timothy Conan, states that Schaeffer would have “no hostile contact” with his wife.
A hearing on the motion is set for Sept. 18 in Sumter County Court.
Schaeffer has pleaded not guilty in the case.
The Schaeffers bought their home in the Haciendas of Mission Hills in January for $565,000.
