Villager takes home gold medal in men’s doubles table tennis at Florida Senior Games

Tuesday was a wet and cloudy day in Clearwater for Day Four of the Florida Senior Games.

Due to the weather, some of the golfers were still on the course at 5:15 p.m. when play was suspended for the day. Those not finished were scheduled to complete their rounds Wednesday.

All of the women golfers and a majority of the men were able to complete their rounds.

Tallahassee’s Ed Hoover had the day’s lowest score with a round of 74 in the men’s 70-74 age group.

Nick Kent, of The Villages, was one stroke back. Kent won the gold medal in the 70-74 age group in both 2015 and 2016 but did not compete in 2017.

Sarasota’s John Shultz, the 2009 Florida Senior Games Male Athlete of the Year, won the singles gold medal in the 80-84 age group of table tennis. It was his 26th consecutive win in the sport.

He also paired with The Villages’ Deane Chickering to win their sixth men’s doubles gold medal since 2008.

Wednesday features the second day of golf competition and Mixed Doubles Tennis at Innisbrook Resort and Golf Club.
