Villagers’ son armed with kitchen knives corners mother in bedroom closet

Jonathan Mathew Wood

A Villages couple’s 29-year-old son armed with large kitchen knives was arrested after he allegedly cornered his mother in a bedroom closet.

Fruitland Park police were called Monday night to a home in the 3200 block of Wise Way in the Village of Pine Hills.

The adoptive mother of Jonathan Mathew Wood said she had been having dinner with her husband and her son when he demanded money from them, according to an arrest report. She described Wood as “mentally ill” and said he collects Social Security disability. She said she deposits money daily onto a debit card that he can use, but said he wanted “all of his money” immediately.

The argument became heated and he threatened to “kill everyone” in the house, the report said.

Wood’s father went to a neighbor’s house to get help and call 911, leaving his wife alone with their son.

The 210-pound son grabbed two large kitchen knives and began walking toward his mother. She “tried talking him down” as she walked backward toward her bedroom. She tried to close a bedroom door, but her son forced it open. She kept walking backward to a walk-in closet while her son continued to pursue her. She failed to close the closet door and, as a last resort, attempted to shield herself with clothing in the closet.

Her husband returned with a neighbor, heard screaming and ran to the bedroom. They were able to talk Wood into surrendering the knives, but not before he had threatened to kill his father.

Wood was arrested on felony charges of aggravated assault and aggravated domestic battery.

He was booked at the Lake County Jail, where he initially was held without bond.
