A well-known cyclist in The Villages is recovering after being struck by a van while riding in The Villages.

Dr. Gabe Mirkin, a columnist for Villages-News.com, had been riding June 26 on Winifred Boulevard when the accident occurred. Two cars were parked on the opposite side of the street. A contractor van approached from behind the parked cars, swung out to pass them, and collided with Mirkin’s bicycle. He went down when the van hit him with the driver side door. EMS took him to The Villages Regional Hospital ER where he was X-Rayed.

He is said to be in pain with three broken/cracked ribs and a dislocated shoulder.

Mirkin’s wife, Diana, suffered a broken ankle earlier this year and continues to recover.

On Friday, Mirkin remained upbeat.

“I have never had so much food in my refrigerator in my life,” he said.

He thanked the Villages cycling community with looking after him.
