Woman with baby arrested after attempting to steal more than $700 in merchandise at Belk

Rachial Crossley

A woman with a baby was arrested after allegedly attempting to steal more than $700 in merchandise at Belk at La Plaza Grande in The Villages.

Rachial Crossley, 52, of Leesburg, entered the store at 10:50 a.m. Tuesday with a baby in a car seat that she had put into a Belk shopping cart, according to an arrest report from the Lady Lake Police Department.

The store’s loss prevention officer watched her select several items, including children’s and ladies clothing. She then took the items into a fitting room. She came out of the fitting room, selected more items and went back inside.

As she attempted to leave the store, it was noticed that Crossley’s waistline and purse were larger than they had been when she entered the store. The loss prevention officer went to the fitting room which was empty.

She was detained and later taken into custody on a charge of retail theft. The items had a total value of $754.35.

She was booked at the Lake County Jail and released after posting $2,000 bond.
