Woman sentenced to prison time after golf cart DUI arrest in Village of Buttonwood

Michelle Armstrong

A woman has been sentenced to prison time after a golf cart drunk driving arrest earlier this year in the Village of Buttonwood.

Michelle Barbara Armstrong, 47, was sentenced this past week in Sumter County Court to two years and four months with the Florida Department of Corrections. Upon her release, she will be on drug offender probation for 32 months. She has multiple previous DUI convictions.

A Sumter County sheriff’s deputy on Jan. 31 spotted a maroon golf cart traveling at 33 miles per hour, well above the 20 miles per hour limit required for a non-Street Legal golf cart, according to an arrest report from the Sumter County Sheriff’s Office. A traffic stop was initiated at St. Charles Place and Buttonwood Run.

As the deputy approached the golf cart,  Armstrong lit up a cigarette and began smoking. Despite the smoke, the deputy detected the smell of alcohol. She stumbled out of the golf cart and struggled through field sobriety exercises. In the glove compartment of the golf cart, the deputy found two empty alcohol containers, one being a Fireball and the other an Xxpresso 99 Percent Liquor. Armstrong refused to provide a breath sample.

She also was cited for open container.
