A man who allegedly pushed a shopping cart full of stolen Wal-Mart merchandise over a county line is facing a charge of grand theft.

Charles Conklin, 31, entered the Wal-Mart in Summerfield on Tuesday morning, loaded merchandise into the cart and pushed the cart along U.S. Hwy. 441 into Sumter County. He was soon spotted and deputies from Marion County and Sumter County arrived at the scene.

Because he was located in Sumter County, he was given the choice of being booked at either the Sumter County or Marion County Jail. He said he would prefer to be booked at the Marion County Jail because he “did not want the hassle” of being processed at two county jails, according to the arrest report from the Marion County Sheriff’s Office.

The arrest report also indicated that Conklin is homeless.
