A 33-year-old Summerfield man was arrested Sunday after he allegedly pushed a shopping cart filled with merchandise out of Wal-Mart without paying for it.

Christopher David O’Brien had filled a cart with more than $400 in merchandise and gone to the self checkout lane at the Summerfield store.

He scanned a belt and attempted to pay for it, but his credit card was declined, according to an arrest report from the Marion County Sheriff’s Office. He put the belt in a bag and into the cart before pushing the cart past all points of sale. He was stopped by a loss prevention officer.

The cart contained more than 100 items with a total value of $435.12.

O’Brien told a deputy he had been heading back to his car to obtain another credit card.

He was arrested on a charge of grand theft and booked at the Marion County Jail.
