Jason R. Gignac, 38, had been in a struggle with Florida Highway Patrol troopers Saturday afternoon at the hospital when a gun went off, wounding a nurse in the leg, according to an account provided by FHP. The nurse is in stable condition.

Gignac had been arrested earlier in the day at Mile Marker 341 on Interstate 75 in Marion County where he had been walking. He requested to be transported to the hospital, claiming he was ill.

After receiving medical treatment, Gignac was in the process of being discharged when FHP troopers attempted to take him into custody on a charge of failure to obey a lawful order. That’s when the struggle occurred and the nurse was shot. Three troopers also suffered minor injuries.

Gignac is facing three counts of battery on a law enforcement officer and charges of resisting arrest.

He was booked at the Marion County Jail.
