Sumter County officials cut ribbon on $8 million courthouse renovation

Sumter County officials cut the ribbon Tuesday afternoon on the renovated Sumter County Courthouse and Jail in Bushnell.

“At a time when many counties are tearing down old courthouses, it was decided here to preserve the history,” said Sumter County Commission Chairman Al Butler who presided at the ceremony.

The courthouse was originally constructed in 1914 at a cost of $56,000

Thanks to the $8 million renovation, the courthouse is now “ready for the 21st Century,” Butler said.

Beginning in January, the Sumter County Board of Commissioners meetings will relocate from the Sumter County Government Offices to the historic courtroom. The first meeting to be held in the new location will be at 5 p.m. Jan. 14.
