The complete demolition of the Tierra Del Sol Recreation Center is a possibility for the aging and soon-to-be-renovated facility.

The idea, to be considered by the Amenity Authority Committee on Wednesday, is the latest twist in a long series of twists and turns for the facility.

A memo from District Manager Janet Tutt to the AAC indicates that the cost of demolition would be $7,500.

“The new facility will provide additional square footage designed to better utilize space for activities, maintenance and overall operations,” Tutt said in the memo.

She indicates that the newly constructed facility will provide approximately 6,500 square feet of space at a cost of $1.2 to $1.35 million versus the $1.1 million cost estimate presented to the AAC earlier this year.

“Although the cost could be 10 to 15 percent greater than originally suggested, we believe the floor plan/accessibility utilization is substantially improved,” Tutt said.

In August, the Village Recreation Department met with residents of the Tierra Del Sol area to review plans for the facility. Residents were elated to see the plans which include indoor restrooms.

The plan for demolition apparently has buy-in from an influential voice — Tootie Jackson of the Village of Palo Alto.

She led a petition effort more than two years ago to draw attention to the need to update the facility.

Tootie has pleaded the Tierra del Sol case before the AAC at every meeting since July 2011 (except one during which she was battling a health issue.)

For a brief time this summer, the idea of taking on the building which houses the Tierra Del Sol Restaurant was pitched to the AAC. But no action has ever been taken on that idea.

The AAC meets at 9 a.m. Wednesday at the Savannah Center.
