Greg Bullock, Paige Boone top finishers at 5K race

Greg Bullock and Paige Boone were the overall winners in Saturday morning’s 5K run at Lake Sumter Landing.

The event which stepped off at 8 a.m. was the latest 5K in the “Running the Squares” race series staged by the Villages Recreation Department.

Two hundred and sixty runners took part in the run

Children as young as 6 years old and runners in their 80s participated.

Al Grigull, battling the effects of chemotherapy, laced up his shoes to run. He sported a “Chemo Sucks!” T-shirt.

Bullock, the Overall Male Winner, finished in 20 minutes and 28 seconds. Boone was 3 minutes and 3 seconds behind and was named Overall Female Winner.

Then finishers started crossing the line in packs.  Wives, husbands, children, friends and neighbors, and even strangers were there to cheer them to the line with loud rounds of applause and cheer. Hundreds of finishers and spectators surrounded the finish line to cheer on even the last of the runners over an hour after they started.

The Villages Cheerleaders were on hand to give the runners a big sendoff.
