Marion County Sheriff’s Office detectives are working a case concerning the deaths of approximately 100 baby pigeons and the grand theft of one thousand homing pigeons.
Investigators learned that the crime took place during the night hours of Saturday, February 15, 2014 on farm along S.E. 84th Terrace in Summerfield. The victim told investigators a person or a team “possibly drove into his neighbor’s open field which leads to the pigeon coop.” Also, the victim said the crime had to happen during overnight hours because family members and workers help take care of the farm animals during the day.
The stolen birds are worth $18,000. The dead baby birds are valued at $1,800. According to the victim, it was not possible for the birds to get out. “And had the birds gotten loose, they would still be in the yard due to the birds being homing pigeons and they do not go far from their home,” according to the victim.
