This week The Villages Regional Hospital is celebrating National Patient Safety Awareness Week (March 2 – 8.) Included in the celebration is the selection of the 2014 Patient Safety Champion – a TVRH employee who has served as an advocate, role model, educator or leader for improving patient safety.

After being nominated by a patient, Kelley Elwell, RN was selected as the 2014 Patient Safety Champion. Elwell has cared for patients at TVRH for more than 6 years. She is currently a nurse in the hospital’s Moffitt Cancer Center.

“Kelley is a strong patient safety advocate and meets all of the criteria for the Patient Safety Champion award,” says Michele Michaels, Patient Safety Coordinator at TVRH.  In her nomination, Elwell was praised for her diligence in preventing a possible severe complication for a patient about to undergo chemotherapy and radiation therapy.”

Michaels added, “We are proud of Kelley and our entire team for working hard each day to make The Villages Regional Hospital a leading healthcare provider in the community.”

In addition to the selection of a Patient Safety Champion, TVRH has information displayed in front of the hospital cafeteria all week to encourage patients and their  families to become active and informed members of the healthcare team.
