The residents of the Haciendas of Mission Hills neighborhood of the Villages paid tribute recently to a man who played a key role in the apprehension of the “Bicycle Bandit” this past Christmas season.
Haciendas of Mission Hills resident Karen Lupnacca was home on the afternoon of Dec. 16 when she thought she saw someone take packages and flee on a bicycle. An avid runner, she began chasing him through the neighborhood.
David Chambers of GO Concrete Designs was working on a project in the neighborhood, when he saw the cyclist.
Chambers got in his car and followed the alleged thief to Lake Sumter Landing Market Square. There Chambers used his phone to snap a photograph of the suspect and delivered the photograph to the Sumter County Sheriff’s Office.
This information led directly to the suspect’s capture and return of the stolen merchandise.
Jason Friend, 26, of Lady Lake, is facing charges of burglary and grand theft, both felonies. His next court appearance is a pretrial hearing set for April 15 in Sumter County Court.
Chambers was presented with a certificate of appreciation by the Mission Hills Neighborhood Club.
