An accident involving Village Airport Van was under investigation Sunday afternoon by the Florida Highway Patrol.

The accident occurred shortly before 5 p.m. on the Florida Turnpike at Exit 304 near Wildwood. Exit 304 connects with U.S. Hwy. 301 in Wildwood.

At least seven people were injured, according to initial reports from the scene.

In addition to FHP, multiple ambulances from Sumter County EMS, operated by Rural/Metro Ambulance, were at the scene.

Traffic was said to be backed up for at least a mile. A witness said passengers had to be freed through the back door of the van. After the impact, passengers’ luggage was said to be strewn out along the highway.

Village Airport Van primarily shuttles Villagers and other area residents back and forth from the Orlando International  Airport.
