A 40-year-old Eustis woman has died as the result of being shot during the investigation of a hit-and-run accident which occurred Saturday.
Pamela Edwards died Monday at Orlando Regional Medical Center.
Edwards had been traveling eastbound at 12:25 p.m. Saturday on State Road 44 (Orange Ave.) approaching the intersection on the County Road 44 Bypass when she made a left turn onto CR 44 Bypass at a high rate of speed, according to an accident report from the Florida Highway Patrol. She lost control of her 1998 Ford Mustang and it collided with a 2005 Honda van driven by 30-year-old Billy Lawless of Eustis. He had five passengers in the van at the time of the accident. None were injured.
Two Lake County sheriff’s deputies and a Eustis police officer responded to Edwards’ home to investigate the accident. She produced a handgun and the officers felt threatened, according to a spokesman from the sheriff’s office.
The officers were not injured. All three have been placed on administrative leave pending a preliminary review of the shooting, which is being investigated by the Florida Department of Law Enforcement.
Edwards had been booked in 2011 at the Lake County Jail for criminal contempt of court.
