George David Katz, Ph.D., 81, lately of The Villages, FL, with a summer home in the NC mountains, formerly of Fairfax, VA and Somerville, SC, died peacefully on Sunday, June 28, 2015 after a brief illness. Retired in 1995 after 33 years of service with the Department of Defense, including a term as Director of the United States Defense Intelligence Agency. He graduated from Gettysburg College, and received a Master’s of Science from Penn State University, a Master’s of Public Administration and Doctor of Public Administration from the University of Southern California. Born in Atlantic City, Dave was predeceased by the love of his life, Marguerite “Rite” Manning Katz in 2008, and his mother Adelaide Deibler, of State College in 1997. He is survived by his two loving sisters-in-law, Ms. Martha Ann Blair, Ms. Morrie Manning, both of The Villages, FL and nine cousins, the Rhodes family of Lewistown, PA. Dave played college football, and was commissioned as a Lt. in the US Navy, where he worked as a Navy Pilot until 1963. His hobbies included parachuting, sky diving; with over 1,000 jumps, skiing, golfing and pickle ball. He practiced Qigong and sang in a beautiful deep baritone voice in “Bach with a Beat”. Dave and Rite shared a love for Community Theater, where they met, and remained avid dog lovers and champions of animal kindness. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to CFCarts.com, Diabetes.org or your local pet rescue organization. Plans for a memorial service will be determined by the family.
