Ben Whittaker (Robert De Niro) is a 70 year-old retiree who has recently become a widower. Sitting home alone and twiddling is not his cup of tea. He needs a purpose, an involvement of some kind. A classified ad soliciting interns for a burgeoning company grabs his attention. There are no restrictions.
Jules Ostin (Anne Hathaway) is the owner and president of an on-line woman’s wear distributer that guarantees that their garments will fit. This innovative firm is nirvana for women of all sizes and sales seem to double every week. Her staff is comprised of 125 resourceful, yuppie computer nerds. Ostin feels that her staff is stratified and asks her second-in-command to recruit a half dozen interns to bring in new ideas.
Whittaker wins one of the jobs. As an inside joke, the intern master assigns Whittaker to Ostin. He tells her she should set an example, but her high-speed sprint through life says no.
The senior intern is the odd-ball. He arrives on time, wears a business suit and a tie, and is the last to leave. He shaves every day! Carries a brief case. Does not have a cell phone. Is considerate, kind, and helpful to his fellow workers.
Needless to say the oil-water relationship between Ostin and Whittaker has its problems. When the breakthrough comes, the two learn from each other. Oscar winners De Niro and Hathaway are right for their parts. It understandably becomes a feel-good movie and wins an A grade from me. It a must-see for seniors.
Currently “The Intern” is showing at Rialto in The Villages. It is nearing the end of its run, so put it on your schedule for this coming weekend.
