Lady Lake said goodbye Monday night to a 10-year veteran of its police.

Lt. Vernon Wherry is retiring after a long and distinguished career in law enforcement.

He was honored Monday night at the Lady Lake Commission meeting.

“We are losing a good colleague and friend,” said Lady Lake Police Chief Chris McKinstry.

Wherry’s wife, Patty, was at his side when he was presented with a display that included his badge and service revolver.

The Marine Corps veteran enjoyed a long and varied career. Before joining the Lady Lake Police Department in 2005, he served for 18 years as an associate professor of criminal justice at Merryhurst University. Prior to that, he worked for 10 years as a training coordinator for the U.S. Department of Justice.
