It was a special night for 16-year-old Tyler Smythe when the American Legion Auxiliary Unit 347 awarded him with the National Good Deed Award. The award is presented annually to recognize the heroism and helpfulness of youths under 18.
Proud grandmother and Auxiliary President Mary La Noce, said Tyler, who lives in Fleming Island, gave up his summer job last year to come and take care of her after surgery in June.
“Tyler works at the concession stand at a local pool in Fleming Island,” she said.
“He gave up a summer of fun and girls at the pool to take care of me after disc surgery. He’s a truly thoughtful and great kid. I am very proud of him!” she added.
Tyler’s parents, Bernard and Joanne Smythe, were very proud and excited for their son.
“This was a total surprise for him!” Joanne Smythe said.
The National Good Deed Award is presented to one recipient per state every year. Tyler was chosen by committee for the state of Florida. Upon graduation from high school, Tyler hopes to attend the University of Florida or Duke University to pursue a pharmaceutical career.
