It was time to party at Gator’s Dockside in Spanish Springs Friday evening when 70 of Officer Jimmy Thomas’ friends and family showed up for his retirement bash. This was an opportunity to show him how much he was appreciated and well liked during his 10 years patrolling Spanish Springs Town Square in the evenings.
After retiring from the Fort Payne, Ala. police force after 30 years, he came to The Villages with every intention of retiring. Instead, he went to work for the Lady Lake Police Department.

“This time he’s ready to retire. It will stick,” his wife, Teri, said.
The entire back section of Gator’s was reserved for his party. Everyone pitched in for a special retirement cake and a going away gift.
Al Berliner, along with Dolly Pelny, planned the party.
“He’s a great guy. He’ll do anything to help you,” Berliner said. “He’s got our backs and we have his. Retirement won’t change that.”
Retired New York police officer Rich Quinlan said Thomas will be sadly missed in the square.
“Teri has a very long honey-do list for him so, that will keep him busy,” he said.

Betty Mayo, who lives in the Village of Orange Blossom Gardens, will be especially sad to see “Officer Jimmy” go.
“He was very helpful to me and my Mom and aided me when my car broke down. He goes above and beyond and we’ll miss him terribly.” she said.
Thomas plans to travel and see his family and grandkids, something he wasn’t able to find time to do before.
The party continued into Spanish Springs Town Square for an evening of music, dancing, reminiscing and laughter.
Taking Officer Jimmy’s place in the square is Officer Rich Michaud.
