The Villager, who has succeeded former state Rep. Marlene O’Toole in the Florida Statehouse, is championing a bill that would require motorcyclists to wear helmets.
Florida has the most motorcycle fatalities in the nation, according to a report from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. Motorcyclists accounted for one-fifth of motor vehicle fatalities in the state, while only making up about seven percent of licensed motorists.
A person over 21 years of age may operate or ride upon a motorcycle without wearing a helmet in Florida if they are covered by an insurance policy providing for at least $10,000 in medical benefits for injuries incurred as a result of a crash while operating or riding on a motorcycle.
There are several organizations, including AAA, which support mandatory helmet laws.
Many motorcycle enthusiasts oppose mandatory helmet laws. They argue they should enjoy freedom of choice.
