A dog in an abusive situation would likely have died had it not been rescued this past week in Lady Lake.
A veterinarian who examined the dog, named “Maui” by Lady Lake’s Animal Control Officer, had been chained up at a residence with a bowl full of green water and soggy, moldy food. The owner is facing a felony charge of animal cruelty. You can read about his arrest HERE
A veterinarian who examined Maui found that the dog’s blood count showed an anemia reflective of the dog’s severe infection/inflammation.
The dog had lost nearly 30 pounds while chained up.
“Had the dog not been removed from his previous situation, the dog would have more than likely perished within a few more days,” said Dr. Nikita Viens of Animal Clinic of Lady Lake.
Maui also had open sores causing him great pain.
The dog will require surgery for rectal reconstruction and bilateral total ear canal ablations. The surgery will likely cost thousands of dollars.
