A dog rescued last month in an animal cruelty case continues to improve and will be ready for adoption at some point.
Maui was confiscated in March from a 34-year-old Lady Lake man who had severely neglected the dog to the point it was emaciated and covered with fleas and open sores. Gregorio Ortiz-Rubio is free on bond and faces a felony charge of animal cruelty. When Lady Lake police paid him a visit after a tip about the four-year-old Pit mix living in inhumane conditions, the chained-up dog’s water was green and its food was soggy and moldy. “He is not quite ready for adoption yet as he has several extensive surgeries to undergo, but he will be looking for a new forever home in the future,” said Lady Lake Animal Control Officer Denise Williams.
She led the effort to raise money for the dog’s surgeries.
