When one reaches their mid-life crisis stage, it would be nice to take off some time from work to ‘find’ or reinvent yourself. Most of us just cannot afford to do this, so we must make-do with what we have.
Joan Anderson (Karen Allen), on the other hand, is a successful author and married to a thriving business man. He wants her to stay at home and become his wife in more than name only. She will have none of that. A flyer arrives in the mail touting the serenity of Cape Cod. Joan is off to a small rental on the shore.
Joan makes new friends and flirts with a much younger man. Small day-to-day challenges help her refocus on her future.
Acting by Allen is superb and she has me believing everything she says.
I chose this movie, which turned out to be a lighthearted drama, as a healthy deviation from the slam-bang action listings currently on the silver screen.
“Chick-Flick” would be a cheap shot, so I’ll skip that. Women will definitely like “Year By The Sea.” Men will find it dull and annoying.
The movie is currently playing at The Rialto Theater in The Villages.
