An 82-year-old Sumter County woman was seriously injured in an accident Saturday after her vehicle became submerged in a pond in Hillsborough County.
Leona Evans of Webster had been at the wheel of a 2015 Hyundai Santa Fe at 5:07 p.m. when her vehicle struck a utility pole, became airborne, crossed an embankment, collided with a chain link fence and finally entered a pond, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.
Deputies with the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office arrived shortly after the crash, entered the pond and rescued her from the sinking vehicle. Moments after the rescue, the vehicle submerged completely. She was transported to Lakeland Regional Medical Center.
