Lady Lake ban on medical marijuana dispensaries to end in February after proposed measure fails to move forward

A proposed long-term prohibition on medical marijuana dispensaries and treatment facilities in the Town of Lady Lake died during a meeting Monday night.

The Lady Lake Commission had considered strict regulation on any proposed dispensaries based on the fear of proliferation of such establishments. Earlier this year, Lady Lake Police Chief Chris McKinstry detailed those concerns from his days in law enforcement in South Florida.

Commissioner Ruth Kussard on Monday night made a motion in support of the measure, citing the availability of existing medical marijuana dispensaries in nearby Summerfield.

However, her motion died for lack of a second.

Mayor Jim Richards has previously pointed out that the voters of Florida supported medical marijuana last year. He has said that it would not be fair to purposely make access to medical marijuana inconvenient for residents of the town.

A 180-day moratorium is currently in place on medical marijuana dispensaries in Lady Lake. It expires on Feb. 3.
