Taru Malik Franklin

Sumter County sheriff’s deputies arrested a wanted man who rented a Penske moving truck in Virginia that was never returned.

The investigation began with a complaint that someone had moved without permission onto property in the 800 block of County Road 466 in Oxford.

Taru Malik Franklin, 40, claimed he purchased the property online for $5,000, according to an arrest report from the sheriff’s office. A check with the Sumter County Property Appraiser’s Office revealed that was not true.

Deputies discovered Franklin was wanted on several out-of-state warrants charging him with theft.

The Penske vehicle, which contained Franklin’s possessions, had been due to be returned on Feb. 23.

He was arrested on a charge of grand theft of a motor vehicle and booked at the Sumter County Detention Center.
