Justin Joseph Bennett

A man was arrested after he was caught driving a golf cart in the wrong direction on U.S. Hwy. 27/441 in Lady Lake.

An officer spotted the white Yamaha golf cart at 7:30 p.m. April 7 driving north on the southbound lanes of U.S. Hwy. 27/441 near its intersection with County Road 25, according to an arrest report from the Lady Lake Police Department.

The driver was identified as 37-year-old Justin Joseph Bennett of Summerfield. He said he had been trying to return to Spanish Springs Town Square. An open bottle of Bud Light was spotted in the golf cart. He was unsteady on his feet.

He failed field sobriety exercises and was transported to the Lady Lake Police Department for a breath test.

He became “increasingly hostile,” slammed his fist on a desk and claimed he was being denied his rights, according to the arrest report. He refused to provide a breath sample.

Bennett was arrested on a charge of driving under the influence and issued a written warning for operating a golf cart on a prohibited roadway.

It was also discovered he was driving on a revoked license.

He was booked at the Lake County Jail and released after posting $11,000 bond.
