‘Adrift’ pits woman against the terrors of nature

Tami (Shailene Woodley) and Richard (Sam Claflin) are a wandering twosome who happen to be enjoying a brief break in Tahiti.  They meet a wealthy British husband and wife who are sailing around the world in their lavish 41-foot sailing yacht, Hazana. The couple is unexpectedly called back to England for a family emergency. They ask Tami and Richard if they would take their boat back to San Diego for a $10,000 fee.

The trip begins peacefully enough and the pair romance their way through several sunsets. But the normally tranquil Pacific is torn apart by the 1983 hurricane, Raymond, which nearly sinks the yacht.  Richard is drastically injured during the storm and dies leaving Tami to sail alone.

Without radio communications, the Hazana is presumed lost.  It is only through courage, determination, and resourcefulness that Tami survives 41 days of desolation and isolation.

“Adrift” is a true story. Woodley bears a striking resemblance to the real life Tami.  This story of a woman’s grit is worthy of a trip to the Rialto in The Villages.

Note: The record for drifting in the Pacific is 47 days is held by Louis Zampereni whose airplane was shot down during World War II.
