A Villager called Marion County deputies for help after realizing a check she paid a contractor had been altered and cashed.

The woman, who lives in the 9200 block of SE 171st Cooper Lane in the Village of Woodbury, said a man knocked on her door June 8 asking if she wanted repairs done to her driveway. She said the man told her he had worked for the company that installed her driveway six years ago. He said that he no longer worked for that company but he could repair the driveway and then seal it for free, a sheriff’s office report says.

The woman said the man started working on the driveway the same day but could not finish because of bad weather. She said he came back the following day and when he was finished, she wrote him a check to cover the cost of the repairs.

The woman said she never received a receipt or an invoice but was notified by her bank June 11 when the check was cashed. She noticed it had been altered when she obtained a copy of the cashed check from her bank, the report says.
