Gary Sorace

A Recreation Department employee has applied for a vacancy on the Community Development District 4 Board of Supervisors.

Village of Chatham resident Gary Sorace, who works as a facility specialist at Rohan Recreation Center, has filed paperwork seeking appointment to the board.

He and Village of Springdale resident Janet Bassett have applied to fill the vacancy created by the announcement by Supervisor Jim Brockman that he will be stepping down in September.

Sorace spent 40 years as an educator, including 35 years teaching at-risk students in the Twinsburg, Ohio schools and nine years coaching the middle school wrestling program. He served as a councilman-at-large in Twinsburg for 12 years and was president of that city’s Chamber of Commerce and Rotary Club. In 2016, he was inducted into the Ohio Chapter of the National Wrestling Hall of Fame with the Lifetime Service Award.

He purchased a home in The Villages five years ago. During those five years, he has served as a volunteer with Villages Honor Flight.

Applications for the supervisor’s seat are being accepted through Aug. 31 at the District Office at Lake Sumter Landing.

CDD 4 supervisors expect to make an appointment at their Sept. 14 meeting.
